Day 1 - Sydney

Mindy and I landed in Sydney this morning at 830AM and started our holiday in the Land of Oz.  The process to get through customs, get our bags, take the train into town and check into the Sydney Harbor Marriott was blazingly fast.  By 1030AM, we were at the Sydney Opera House were we took this snapshot of the Harbor Bridge!  What an amazing site.

Although we wanted to climb to the top of the bridge, the over $100/person cost to do so was too much for us.  We instead chose to take the 1 hour tour of the Opera House, which cost significantly less.  What a great tour!  While you can see the outside of the Opera House at no cost, the true gem here is getting into the Concert Hall and other main theater where the opera and ballet are performed.  Although they won't let you take snap shots inside the theaters, we did get the following pics.

By the end of the tour, it was 1230PM and time to move on.  So we made our way to Circular Wharf where we caught a ferry to the Taronga Zoo on the north side of Sydney Harbor.  Although a bit expensive in my view ($44/ticket), this zoo is one of the best in the world.  Amongst all the animals we saw, the giraffe, elephants, lion & kangaroo were highlights.

We wrapped up our zoo experience around 330PM and headed to Manly Beach to take in the surf.  Manly Beach (on the north side of the harbor) is lesser known than Bondi Beach (which is on the southern side of the harbor).  However is a totally awesome beach community.  The swells today were the biggest I have ever seen.  The photos we have don't do it justice.  However we did want to point out there were several surfers in the water despite the 15 foot surf waves!

Around 5PM, we caught a ferry from Manly back to Circular Quay.  After changing into warmer clothes at the hotel, we ate a quick dinner and called it a day.  Given the 14 hour flight from LAX and the jet lag we are suffering, making it out to 7PM today was a total success!  Looking forward to flying up to Cairns/Port Douglas tomorrow!  Will write more when we get there.
