This morning we made the 4 hour drive from Queenstown to the Milford Sound, which has been described as the "8th" Natural Wonder of the World. Our general sentiment from today is that we agree!
The drive itself from Te Anua (about 2 hours from Queenstown) to the Milford Sound is the most stunning drive I have ever driven. The pictures we have below won't do it justice.
About 30 km out from the Milford Sound, the road goes through a 1km tunnel. What were the Kiwi's thinking when they built this road! The tunnel was dug through a mountain that is sheer granite rock. Must have taken forever to dig this out. Furthermore, once you are in the tunnel, there are no support beams or internal insulation in the tunnel. It's basically your car, the road and rock all around you!
This is the view when you get out of the tunnel. Would be nicer if that ugly dude wasn't in the way!
And this is what we we rewarded with once we finished the drive - The Milford Sound!
We took a 2 hour boat cruise around the sound. Here are a few pictures from that ride.
Notice the waterfall in the next picture (sorry about the sunlight glare!). Then notice the tiny boat in front of it! That boat is 3 stories tall - Just to give you an idea of how tall the falls and mountains are!
More falls!
At the outskirts of the sound.
On the drive home after the sound boat tour, we took these pics before heading back into the tunnel. Notice the sheer strait-up granite wall that the tunnel is built into!
xx
